The Genesis of Rikets

There is a lot of folklore and legend about Rikets, how it began, who played on what records, and who/what was preserved.

Read the genesis of rikets and scope in. rikets spent nearly two years as a writing and studio unit before many members known to the public were brought in. Fueled by a writing partnership between rose and Schigel, the project eventually took form in Cleveland ohio as members were added to the live machine. With a lineup change nearly every album release, the band took on a legend of being a rockstar boot camp with many of it’s live member’s graduating onto bands like - POwerman5000, Texas hippie coalition, eye empire, nonpoint, all hail the yeti and dope.

expanding Notes:

stated in the bio from the gauntlet, it mentions the track “bitterwords” was produced by “rose” and Tony Gammalo. This happened on this track due to Ben being booked for another artist. Tony also play’s the rhythm guitar track on #bitterwords - he was at the helm and was a major influence on the track and rose’s vocal takes. “Bitterwords” was the first track brad was introduced on as one of session player’s and had officially joined the band after “useless” was recorded. (brad does not appear on “useless”), Ken Obloy and Tony gammalo tracked those guitar’s.

Logan Mader also provided some guitar textures, created the outro sample and final mix of “bitterwords”. ben provided the final live drum take on “bitterwords” and most of the Ep, splitting the duties with rose. Switched bass player Jay French also appears on the drum track for “blister” and spent a short stint as the band’s live drummer during it’s first round of spot touring, shortly replaced by angel bartollota of genitorturer’s fame.

Angel had only recorded 2 demo’s while he was under the rikets flag - “The murder” and “GloryGirl”. angel does not appear on “anything for the devil” - neither does chanley leffel nor Eric Matthews (pro-pain).

The biography below is the official first bio for rikets posted at thegauntlet.com in 2005

In the past decade, Cleveland has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the world of aggressive music. As unlikely a place as any, this burgeoning scene has spawned the likes of several major label acts, among them, Chimaira, Erase the Grey, and Switched.

It is from the ashes of several of these underground heavyweights comes Cleveland's newest, and possibly biggest threat, Rikets. "The band started with a phone call", recalls Rose." Brad and I were catching up one day over the phone and I said 'let's start a band'. Unfortunately, he was still in Switched at the time, so we couldn't do it.."

Ultimately, perseverance paid off as Rose continued writing, along the way picking up vocalist/sampler Matt Haze, guitarist Ken Obloy, bassist Josh Jansen.and original drummer Eric Mathews (Pro-Pain).

Eventually, Switched would go on indefinite hiatus, with most of the members working on other projects (drummer Chad Szeliga took on drum duties in Breaking Benjamin, and vocalist Ben Schigel found continued success as a producer). It was at this point Brad got onboard actively and permanently, after yet another fateful call.

"I called Brad and mentioned that we were looking for a guitar player again." Scott adds. "This time it all fell into place." The collective spent 2 years writing and demoing material before entering Cleveland's renowned Spider Studios to begin what would become the arduous task of tracking their debut EP. It was here under the skilled ear of producer (and Switched vocalist) Ben Schigel (Drowning Pool, Chimaira, Breaking Point), that they would lay down the foundations of the ironically titled "Anything for the Devil".

The result is 5 blistering tracks of all-out metal, paying homage to the heyday of mostly gone-but-not-forgotten greats like Machine Head, Nine Inch Nails, Alice In Chains and Motley Crue. It is only appropriate then, that they enlisted the services of none other than former Machine Head/Soulfly guitarist Logan Mader to mix.

"Logan is a longtime friend of the band and has always been really supportive.", says Rose. "It helps that he also has an amazing ear, and really understood the sound we were going for. We picked the right team and we got it." Logan also appear's on the track, "Bitterwords", a track produced by Rose and Tony Gammalo(It dies today,Trustkill Records).

During the writing and recording of "AFTD" the band would see a few changes, as the lineup was rounded out with the addition of keyboardist Chanley Leffel and drummer Angel, who also pulls double duty as the rhythmic punisher for Florida's infamous Genitorturers.

Now in Summer 2005 Corporate Punishment Records will release the bands much anticipated debut through their newly formed alliance with independent distribution powerhouse Navarre, while the band prepares a rigorous tour schedule that will carry them well into the new year, destroying everything in their path.

Anything For The Devil era (2004-2008)

“Anything for the devil” saw multiple releases, multiple pressings and three different covers.

Released on Corporate punishment records in 2005, the Ep contained 5 songs, 2 of the bands original demo’s from the demon’s session’s -“bitterwords” and “useless” paired with the three defining songs such as “blister”, “Hollywood” and the title track “anything for the devil”.

“anything for the devil”, a widely mis-perceived and mis-understood piece of music, instantly served as the band’s calling card. The mis-conception starts with the song title, it’s perceived that the song is a nod to either “evil” or “the devil”. This is not true, the song itself is actually a love song and serves as a warning to other’s in the retrospect that MONEY and fame are “the devil” and there are people in this world who will do “anything for the devil”.

The song’s lyrical content leads the listener on a love tale gone bad experienced in the setting of two people living and working in the music and movie business. the opening line of “anything for the devil” open’s the clue box of the story… the coded messages inside the verse’s tell of a love tale gone bad coupled with the lifestyle choice’s some people might make in the quest for fame and money.

Not only is “anything for the devil” a warning, it is a reflection of rose’s own personal life, living in Hollywood California as a unsigned musician shaking hand’s,and dating famously toxic women and then throwing up the experience in lyrical form.

the quote was actually stated to rose in a late night conversation, and is what spawned the lyrical content, and idea for the track. It has zero to do with evil, satanism or anything like that. it is MONEY, rose is stating people will do anything for fame and money.

The album’s artwork was a tongue in cheek way of expressing the lyrical content, and a nod to Motley Crue’s album “shout at the devil”. At the time of the release of the song’s, Tommy lee had become a fan, rikets own bck pens the art as a joke after Thom haezart(ellefson) suggests it jokingly. This is the reason for alternate cover’s, once the band was gaining more heat and pressure from possible backlash, bck penned a different cover drawing influence from Andy Warhol’s painting “money”, combining it with a demon in hopes people would again catch the “clue”.

The famous female lyric line - “i’ll do anything for the devil…D D D D D Devil” - is sang by Jackie Laponza of (mushroomhead)

“useless” from “anything for the devil” EP and Demon’s demo’s, ended up being the single on the global release and saw a music video starring Jackie Laponza (mushroomhead)
